Resolved:

  • the vice presidency should be abolished

  1. If there was no Vice President, who do you think would be the best replacement?

    What would be the biggest change if there was no Vice President?

    Looking at the Vice Presidency now, do you think the Framers would continue or abolish it?

  2. How would abolishing the vice presidency impact campaigns?

    Would abolishing the vice presidency give the executive branch more or less power? Why?

    How would the view of the president differ if the vice presidency was abolished? Would this actually give them more or less credibility? Explain.

    Would removing the vice presidency increase polarization in candidates?

    Would party affiliation become more or less important if the vice presidency was removed?

  4. Who would inherit the duties of the vice president if the position were abolished?

    The president delegates duties to the vice president, would abolishing this role increase the power of the president?

    If the position were abolished who would be next in line for the president? Would it be the Speaker of the House? If so what would they have the qualifications the VP would have in fulfilling the role?

  5. Today do we see the Vice President as someone who does the Presidents "busy work?"

    How did the framers view the office of the VP? Did they see him as an important figure?

    Would removing the Vice Presidents office affect voter turnout?

  6. Does a presidential candidate's VP choice help citizens choose who they would like for president and affect the way they vote?

    A duty of the VP is to break ties in the senate. How would the lack of this position be solved?

    Has the office of the VP offered anything positive since the creation of the position?

    2. If the VP was given more power would power have to be stripped from the President in order for that to work?

    3. Many former VPs run for President after the previous administration leaves. If the office of the VP was abolished, how would the route to the office of the presidency change for candidates?

  8. 1.Should the vice presidency be abolished because it plays part simultaneously in the executive and legislative branches, therefore violating the separation of powers doctrine?

    2.Would that be an easy task to abolish the vice presidency and split its powers between the president and Congress?

    3.Do you think that the expansion of presidential power made the vice presidency matter more or less?

  9. 1. What are some ways that the selection of vice presidential candidates could be selected by the people?

    2. If presidents were no longer able to select their own vice presidents, how would this affect their relationship and the delegation of power?

    3. If the presidency were to be abolished, wouldn't the president simply delegate those powers to someone else, in effect making that person the vice president but without the title?

    What would the perception of citizens be should a former VP run for office and win? Would they be seen as an inferior or weaker president?

    Are VP's considered weak in comparison to the President? Why?

  14. 1.There is no doubt abolishing the office of the vice president would completely alter the norms and the culture of the executive branch. In your opinion, what are some ways this change would become a detrimental to the office of the president?

    3.The vice president is probably the second most well-known person in America. But why do you think, with all that fame, he is still irrelevant to the public?

  15. 1. The vice president is first in line to occupy the presidency if anything happens to the current president. If abolished, who would take up those duties?

    2. Realistically, is abolishing the vice presidency something that the American people desire? Or do they not care?

    3. At the constitutional convention, what did the framers intend for the vice president? Is it the same as it is today? If yes, why? If no, why?
